Link and Dark Link Hat by Bisected8 Link and Dark Link Hat by Bisected8
Behold, my first real attempt at making something from fabric (after patterning it myself).

Pretty simple (each hat was made from just a cone and a headband; three seams, and a couple of darts at the back). I used poplin cotton in emerald green and black (sorry for all the boring details, but this is new to me ^^;). Technically I still need to pink the seams, but they'll still look the same on the outside.

If I had to make it again, I'd make the base of the cone larger or the headband tighter (OoT Link's hat noticeably balloons at the brim) but I'm pretty happy with it.

Next stop; Dark Link's tunic (my master plan is to make a Dark Link outfit to test each pattern, since black material is more forgiving than other colours). :D

Was making the hat hard? I'm doing Shadow Link for Ren Fest and I think this is going to be my hardest thing ;; any tips?

It was pretty easy (I had a lot less trouble than I've having with the gloves right now :XD:).

The pattern I used was a circle sector folded into a cone and adjusted. If you're mathematically inclined you can basically work it out on paper (the sector should have an arc length the same as your hat size and a radius the length you want your hat). It's easier to use an isosceles triangle though (base = hat size, height = hat length). Either way, I also cut a triangle into the back to make it slope a little. Also remember to add seam allowance. It'll probably take a few tries with cheap fabric before you get the hat shape you want.

The headband was literally just a strip of cloth folded in half along its length, sewn at either end and sewn to the base of the hat (I also made it taper a bit in the middle, but I don't think that was worth the effort). Make the headband your exact hat size and make the mouth of the hat a little larger (to get than nice poofy effect).

Keep in mind that this is the OoT Link hat; the other games have different flourishes on them.
